0 A large tapestry of King Tutankhamen’s head watches overhead as a large number of guests looks on during Friday’s grand opening of the nightclub named in his honor. King Tut’s Lounge, a new Egyptian-inspired hangout in East Orlando, celebrated its debut with belly dancing, food and plenty of fun. Located at on South Alafaya Trail, north of Curry Ford Road, King Tut’s Lounge is the perfect place for people looking for a new experience or a relaxing night out, said owner Joseph Awad. Born in Egypt but raised in Florida, Awad spent a lot of time traveling back his homeland, where cafés and lounges like King Tut’s are very popular. He thought this type of nightspot was just what the East Orlando community was missing, he said. “You can go to any club with hip-hop music, but we sing our songs and we have our drums — it’s pretty cool,” he said. King Tut’s is a large lounge, with benches, chairs and tables arranged into groups. In the back is a beverage bar, and beyond a pool table. Upstairs is another lounge area with brightly colored benches lining the walls with vibrant Egyptian carpets and small, round pillows covering the floor. Most of the decorations, rugs and furniture are imported from Egypt The main feature of the lounge is the hookah, a standing water pipe with an attached hose that is typically used for smoking flavored tobacco. The idea is to share several hookahs between a group of people to experience the different flavors, Awad said. At King Tut’s Lounge, up to two patrons share one portion of flavored tobacco, which costs $6.99. There are 30 different tastes to choose from, all of which also come from Egypt. Among them are mint, cantaloupe and, Awad’s favorite, guava. “[The hookah] is a lot softer than other types of smoking,” he said. “The flavors are what appeals to many customers.” But the hookah isn’t the only attraction at King Tut’s Lounge. The experience all about the authentic Egyptian atmosphere created, in part, by the beautiful belly dancers. Every Friday and Saturday from 10- 11:30 p.m., belly dancers in their glittering costumes sway their hips to the tune of Arabic music to entertain the weekend crowd. At Friday’s opening, people from all different cultures and backgrounds enjoyed a lively night out at the new lounge. “It’s good for the Middle Eastern community to have something like this, but I also think it’s good for non- Middle Easterners to get a taste of our life and culture,” said one customer, Amad Sadiq. “I think it is a good way to bridge the gap between the two cultures.” (eosun.com) Drink Specials, Happy Hours and Promotions for: King Tut’s Lounge Popular
