Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer sat down last week for separate interviews with Orlando Sentinel reporters Mark Schlueb and David Damron after the historic votes to fund a $1.1 billion downtown sports-and-arts-venues plan. Dyer easily shepherded a 6-1 vote through the City Council to pay for a new arena, performing-arts center and major Florida Citrus Bowl renovations. Crotty had a much harder job. The pivotal swing votes on the Orange County Commission didn't fall into line until right before the successful 5-2 vote.
In the interview excerpts below, both mayors discuss crucial elements of the venues plan, such as who gets the blame if something goes wrong with it and who really looked out for taxpayers throughout the grueling negotiations. Are their political futures at stake?
What are the biggest financial risks in this plan?
Crotty: In looking at the analysis, I have very little concern from the county perspective, although there's probably more risk at the city level. And I represent everybody in the county no matter where they live. But I would say I'm very bullish on the future. I use the analysis that every day in Orlando somebody risks a weekly paycheck on a 30-year mortgage. . . . The wild card, of course, is a catastrophe like a terrorist attack or a Category 5 hurricane or something like that. But that's a risk that we all take. I mean you take a risk that you could be laid off your job, too... <more> OrlandoSentinel.com July 29, 2007
Most “Big City” colleges are located on the outskirts of downtown, and on the opposite end of the uptown. The college area is like the middle sibling, beating to the sound of their own drum and tooting their own beer bottles.
Orlando is no exception; also known as Central Florida, the college area surrounding the University of Central Florida, Rollins College, Barry University and Valencia (which are all within 15 min. of each other) brings in students from every end of Florida, and all over the country. The bars in this area also reflect the eclectic nature; from the local pub with 5 cent wing specials to uber posh martini bars spilling fifteen dollar martinis down Park Ave., Winter Park. The students and residents have many bars to choose from, but there are a few bars that strain to define the area and bring in the more loyal and local crowds.
“The Knight Library” is anything but a place to study for your upcoming calculus quiz. Cleverly named, the legend is that students swiping the credit cards their parents allowed strictly for books and tuition can catch no flack for their purchases reading “Knight Library” on the bill statement. By no means am I condoning such behavior, let’s please strike that from the record…
If you have been drinking Bud Light or Miller Lite, the best-selling light beers in the country, it might be time to consider a new brew, our taste tests show. Although those two beers were judged very good, several others scored higher. The top light beer: Michelob Ultra Amber, which hit the market just last year.
Americans now drink more light beer than any other kind, and more varieties have frothed up recently to quench that thirst. But shoppers beware: There is no standard for light beer, so you will find calories, and taste, all over the lot.
